The Vigil #6: Let’s Get Lit

The Vigil has been a refreshing and imaginative entry into the DC Universe and with issue 6 closing out its arc, I can say the ending has stuck the landing. Will the Vigil be back? You’ll have to see for yourself. 

When writer Ram V interviewed with Comic Watch on his latest new series for DC comics, he discussed how the series would start as a conspiracy spy story and quickly dive into a tale of strange situations. I am happy to report that the story and its progression into the weird unknown has done so fluidly and made for a great read. 

In my opinion, this series has been one of the coolest comics on shelves and the entire team is awesome and easy to root for. It’s been a wild ride since the team first appeared in the Lazarus event and now it’s time to wrap up their story…hopefully just for now.

It’s been spy situations, double crosses, and outlandish moments that are memorable and both funny and surprising. From start to finish, I have enjoyed this series and this latest issue had me hooked from the first page to the last.

Issue 6 is not without its flaws though. I personally wish the story had continued for a few more issues as the ending is rushed. The reveal of a major antagonist pays off, but it’s at the sacrifice of the pacing. However, I will admit wanting more in this situation isn’t a bad thing. This arc may have wrapped up, but I am still wanting to see more of this team and wasn’t left dissatisfied.

Readers have met the team of Dodge, Saya, Castle, and Arc Light and each has had their time to shine. From a story structure and visual aspect, this series has been awesome in the art department. Visually, The Vigil has had cool action scenes and little details that make the world feel more real. This issue keeps up the quality with art from Devmalya Pramanik and colors from Rain Beredo. 

Now that issue 6 is out, this series warrants a full read through by anyone interested and personally I plan on starting from the beginning to see what I missed and appreciate the story again. I’m a big believer that some stories should be consumed all at once, and this series definitely warrants a binge read.

Going forward, it is unclear how this team will impact the DC Universe, but I do hope to see the team more—and even grow in membership. As a fan of the DC Comics, I always appreciate opportunities to see more of the unexplored parts of the universe and the introduction of new characters with their own abilities.
