Review

Si Spurrier and Vanesa Del Rey continue their descent into the bayou with The Voice Said Kill #2, a gripping thriller set deep in the Louisiana Bayou. Only two issues in, and it feels like equal parts of Twin Peaks and Deliverance. Si Spurrier has created a universe steeped in tension, mystery, and danger. His management of the plot and narrative layers while weaving in and out of characters’ life demons makes the need to find out more intoxicating. From poachers to shiners to park rangers, the characters are vivid and memorable, while capturing the authenticity of the bayou.

As the story unfolds, the pace beckons the readers to immerse themselves in the eerie atmosphere while piecing together the larger mystery. One of the great things about the story so far is how the creative team has come together to create a story so fascinating that when you go back to reread, you’re looking to see if you missed anything visual, or maybe there’s something that a character said that didn’t stick last time. The action sequences leave you breathless. The characters truly come to life on every panel!

Vanesa Del Rey’s art is pure eye candy! Her textured style perfectly complements the dark and moody tone of the story. She makes the bayou come alive through her visualization of the dense forests, shadowy swamps, and dilapidated buildings, creating a hypnotic setting. John Starr’s environment with splashes of vibrant hues helps reflect the emotional beats of Spurrier’s words.

As this series continues, I don’t know how we as readers are going to keep it together until the next installment. The Voice Said Kill is a masterful blend of drama and Southern Gothic charm that is definitely shaping up to be a top series for the year.

Final Thoughts

The back and forth between the characters is compelling, with moments of uneasiness with a dab of dark humor that keep the story going. Tons of emotional complexity that lead to some good speculation going forward. This series is so much fun and a must-read.
