Thor #15: The Power of the Throne

A great issue that (coupled with Avengers) wraps up the War of the Realms better than the event’s Omega issue which should be avoided. As I’ve been saying corporeal death means basically nothing in Asgard (half the time when Odin “dies” he’s actually just on a bender) and we really needed that closure with Malekith. Not to say he can’t come back later (such is the beauty of Asgardian style death) as it has been spelled out exactly where he is we at least get a proper baseline for his next appearance.

The notion of rebuilding Asgard is an interesting one, the Realm Eternal has been destroyed for years (tail end of Jurgens I think?) and since 2006 Asgard (later dubbed Asgardia and outfitted with repulsion tech by Tony Stark) laid in Broxton, Oklahoma. Perhaps the next writer, as this series has one issue to go until it ends, will be able to restore it to glory like we haven’t seen in years.

The victory lap aspect of Jason Aaron’s final main series Thor issues (next issue is the finale) doesn’t feel to be in effect yet thankfully. Although we did get some very nice father son moments between Thor and Odin which were a bit overdue but otherwise were nice.

I still don’t like Mike Del Mundo’s art but the scenes in Hel involving Malekith are not bad I suppose. When we get to Asgard the characters begin to devolve a bit but as far as some of the style choices in this series this issue mainly has panels ranging from good to great, possibly the best issue yet? I also wanted to mention the cover, which is fantastic and to quote Bethany Pope (our usual reviewer I’m filling in for) “one for the ages”.
