Titans #33: Unearthed

To quote Kyle Rayner, “This is some crazy Peter Jackson stuff right here.” This issue was a fun mix of capes and fantasy as the Titans travel into the once imaginary world of Unearth.

After months of build up, it feels like this series is finally getting ready for a big pay-off. The Titans, with the help of Ben Rubel, have not only figured out where Ravens soul self has been all this time but found a way to re-enter unearth and at the same time, possibly stop the Blood Cults plans to harness the source wall energy within Unearth.

In this issue, if finally felt like the new line-up of the team has finally come together after many issues of awkward tension. The story is a fun ride into the Tolkien-esque fantasy realm of Unearth, led by the newly united and and energized team of Titans; complete with epic battles, giant, castles, and awesome fantasy creatures.

The art is well done with dark, cold tones that mirror both the dark savagery of the realm of Unearth as well as reminding the reader of the heroes’ ultimate goal, retrieving Raven’s soul-self. Throughout the issue there are wonderful splash pages depicting the size and scope of the monstrous armies that the Titans face and fantastic depictions of the creatures that inhabit Unearth.

While Titans has seemed to be a title that was having trouble finding it’s path, I feel it has finally hit it’s stride and is about to deliver in a big way.
