Review
Transformers #32 shifts the story back to the intense battle between the Autobots and Decepticons on Cybertron, moving away from the main narrative that has focused on Earth. In the explosive conclusion to the previous main story arc, Optimus Prime relinquished the Matrix of Leadership to Elita 1, empowering her to fight back against the ongoing war on Cybertron, a war Optimus no longer wishes to continue. As Elita left Earth to resume her conflict, several Autobots chose to remain with Optimus, while others sided with Elita, effectively altering the status quo.
The war on Cybertron has been a persistent event in the Energon Universe, mainly explored in the background after Elita first contacted Optimus in an earlier installment of the series. Since then, Cliffjumper has served as the main perspective character, providing much of the emotional weight before accidentally becoming trapped on Cybertron and teaming up with the Autobots. Over the next several issues and story arcs, readers witnessed the Autobots suffer numerous defeats, with Elita repeatedly cursing Optimus for abandoning the war. However, the inclusion of Cliffjumper and other allies gave Elita a slight advantage. This storyline culminated in Elita’s return to Earth, where she reclaimed the Matrix and headed back to Cybertron, determined to change the tide of conflict. Meanwhile, the previously defeated Shockwave was revealed to be alive, vowing revenge on the Autobots.
Unfortunately, this background is essential to fully understand where the story picks up, making this issue a challenging entry point for new fans. For existing fans with prior context, the issue starts with excitement, shaking up the series in bold new ways. There are also several satisfying payoffs, especially for Elita and Ultra Magnus, who both stand out. Ultra Magnus was previously captured and tortured by Shockwave, leading to his fearful behavior and self-isolation until his fellow Autobots reignited his spirit. This issue sees that narrative come full circle, as Ultra Magnus finally faces Shockwave with renewed confidence and strength.
Another major highlight is how Elita utilizes the Matrix. Many fans were confused and upset when Optimus lost the Matrix to Elita, unsure of the story’s direction. Fortunately, writer Robert Kirkman and artist Jason Howard deliver on all fronts, granting Elita significant agency and showcasing her use of the Matrix in ways Optimus never did. Without giving away spoilers, this might become one of the most memorable moments in comics this year. Howard’s art style, reminiscent of the Transformers: Animated series from 2007, enhances the experience.
Final Thoughts
Transformers #32 brings exciting payoffs and character growth for Elita and Ultra Magnus, while shifting the focus to the war on Cybertron and offering creative storytelling and art for longtime fans.
