9.6/10

Transformers/Back to the Future #1 ( @cavanscott, @Juansamuart, Lopes) is one of the smartest crossovers that you'll ever read. Perfectly combining both franchises, it's an amazing read that you're going to love.

Review

With crossovers of different properties, most often they take one set of characters and put them into the others’ “world”. But, on occasion, you get one that takes something from one and combines it with something from the other and creates a new “world” that’s exclusive to the crossover. That’s what this is. Not quite all Back to the Future, not quite all Transformers, it’s its own thing, and I think that was a really wise decision because I liked everything about it. Author Cavan Scott came up with a really unique vision for this story, one that you’re not quite sure of anything, so threats actually feel real and you’re not quite which characters are expendable and which ones are going to stay around. While doing so, Scott manages to throw in a ton of call-backs, famous lines, and familiar scenes from both the Transformers and Back to the Future that you can ever want. This comic is both new and familiar, and that’s what makes it so good.

Artist Juan Samu is unbelievable. He makes the art as unique to this book as the story is. One thing that I liked was that you get likenesses of all the characters, but in a general sense, the characters are never overly detailed actors’ faces and you know that nowhere in the book does he draw from publicity stills or a freeze-frame on his DVD. He gives the book really unique energy, making everything in the book really pop. Another thing that he does really well is his pacing. The Back to the Future movies have a cliffhanger every 5 minutes and thanks to Samu that doesn’t change here

.
All in all, this is one of my favorite crossovers I’ve read in a really long time. If you have even a passing interest in either the Transformers or Back to the Future, I highly recommend you pick up this book.

Final Thoughts
