Review

What do you get when you mix the Justice League with multiple hits of acid? You get the non-stop, pop-culture referencing, bad joke telling, comedic tale of The Turkey Sharks!

Born from the mind of Nealis, this Kickstarter gem is one of those books that fly under the radar and harkens back to the day when word of mouth was king. Case in point: The Turkey Sharks #2 was funded in only a few days, and it’s books like these that make you happy that they’re getting their due attention.

Comedy, much like horror, is all about delivery. Maintaining a balance of plot and laughs that keep the reader’s interest can be a daunting task for some. Josh Nealis doesn’t have that problem. The name alone was enough to back the project when I came across Turkey Sharks on Kickstarter. Add a Breakfast Club homage cover, and there’s no doubt I’m supporting the project. As soon as I started reading Turkey Sharks, I never stopped laughing. Our heroes, Stingray, Pedoman, Ginger Avenger, Kid Friendly, Blasphemer, and Buddy the super squirrel, round out this rag-tag group of superheroes who must band together to save Brothel City from the invading alien Cetis and their sinister leader Snapdragon and his brood of foreign cronies.

Turkey Sharks is tremendous fun! From the battle scenes to the pop-culture references to the surprise advertisement for Until Forever. One of my favorite parts is when Stingray is fighting Snapdragon, and he says that Abraham Lincoln was a loser and Pantera was overrated. It wasn’t the fact that he said Lincoln was a loser, but the quip regarding Pantera was where Stingray draws the line. I can’t blame him! But the fun doesn’t stop there; there’s an iconic reference that would make Ridley Scott proud that seemed to come out of nowhere, but as crazy as this book is, it absolutely fits.

Everything about Turkey Sharks fits together like a comedic jigsaw puzzle, and I absolutely cannot recommend it enough.

Final Thoughts

This was a fun book; I’m definitely backing issue #2, which is live on Kickstarter right now. You can head on over to www.cutthroatcomics.com and grab some earlier books of our heroes and get more acquainted with Josh Nealis’ Universe. I know I am!
