Turok #1: Dinos in the Desert

I liked this issue for the most part but as a first issue it did almost nothing to explain what to expect going forward which is a concern. I have no idea why the cavalry and natives are fighting besides they’re natives and they’re cavalry, haven’t natives suffered enough without being foils for comic storytelling? That was a joke, but I did appreciate that Turok and Andar are identified as Kiowa, a somewhat violent tribe native to the American Southwest, the Kiowa were relocated to the Oklahoma Rez in 1867 so the setting does make some sense as the cavalry is probably rounding up stragglers and pockets of and moving them to the reservations, they do namedrop the Oklahoma Rez as well and the 1871 setting could maybe be clue enough but it takes more digging than it should.

The art by Roberto Castro is great, with a decent depiction of the Colorado high desert, Turok and Andar look pretty great in a fairly generic native kind of way, they are a little hard to tell apart unfortunately, as are the cavalry. During both the action scenes I couldn’t tell who lived and who died until they talked. I don’t care about any of that though because the dinosaurs (all I really care about, honestly) looked GREAT! The last splash page got me very excited for next issue I really hope we get more sweeping visuals of the Lost Valley!
