Recap

THE ULTIMATE GOODBYE... Following the events of ULTIMATE ENDGAME #5, the creative teams of all the Ultimate books come together one last time to say farewell..

Review

With the Maker defeated and the multiverse saved, life continues for the Ultimates and their allies. More and more threats continue to rise in the void left in the Maker’s wake as the world continues to adapt to a new world filled with possibility. A hero’s work is truly never done.

The Ultimate Universe started as an idea that one man had, but due to tragedy had to be picked up by another. From there this world began to shift and change into something wholly different from its original conception. Familiar faces lived different lives and there was always this feeling that something was just a bit off. Like looking into a broken fun house mirror. One group boldly took a stand against this regime, and one by one others followed behind to take control of the destinies they were denied.

This Finale contains a bunch of small epilogues for all the main books in the Ultimate line by the original creative teams that is overall narrated by Tony Stark. I won’t go blow for blow over each one but they all share the central theme of “life goes on”. The Maker is gone, but the world didn’t stop. There is rebuilding to be done and structures that are being put into place to prepare this world for whatever comes next without the Maker’s ever oppressive eye over it. Heroes and villains alike are making moves which makes this book read less like a “Goodbye” and more like a “See You Later”. Black Panther’s section had the least effect on me because I didn’t finish that book, but it is by no means bad. The only knock is that I wish there were more books to explore these ideas further.

The art is excellent throughout with each artist showing the full range of their talents to cap off this finale. There is no one section that truly stands out, but they all do come together well to tell this complete story of this brand new world, complete with a montage of what could have been (and what may still come)

Final Thoughts

Despite many fans' dismay, Ultimate Finale represents the end of the new Ultimate Universe. A world once hampered is now full of potential that will likely never be realized, but if this is truly it then it was a fun ride while it lasted, and just like the last page there is always hope for better.
