Ultimate Wolverine #10

WOLVERINE VS. OMEGA RED! The Eurasian Republic leaders have learned that their prize weapon has joined the Opposition! And Wolverine busts out a secret weapon when Omega Red comes to reclaim him...
Review
Ultimate Wolverine has been a book that seems right on the CUSP of breaking into the upper echelon of the Ultimate line, but routinely falls short and settles into being just a bit above average.
Each passing issue has been giving us the same formula for a while now: opposition has a mission, mission goes bad, bloody Violence ensues, opposition gets away, Dr. Prosovich opines over Logan. This issue does change up the formula a bit by having the Opposition’s base finally be found by Omega Red, but this bit of excitement doesn’t last long as the battle, or at least what we see of it, barely lasts a few pages before the issue ends.
On the character front, it seems the more time we spend with the Opposition the less we actually learn about them. This issue gives a bit more insight into this version of Sabretooth as well as his relationship with Logan, but it only serves to seemingly write him out of the book. As for the rest of the Opposition, we only see them in a splash page before the battle with Omega Red. I know that Logan is the main focus of the book, but as a character he’s always been at his most interesting when he has other characters to bounce off of. There are lots of familiar faces in the Opposition, many of whom have deep connections to Logan in the main 616 reality, but here they seem to be just around to maybe get a word or two in and provide fanservice.
As for the art, Alex Lins tags in for Alessandro Cappuccio this go-round and does a serviceable job. The action, while brief, is energetic and the quieter moments reach the tone they are going for. Nothing too outstanding, but in no ways bad.
Final Thoughts
Ultimate Wolverine #10 sadly remains more of the same. The endgame is coming, but the formula is starting to grow stale. While the action scenes are fun to see (as short as they are) it’s the characters that continue to fall behind the narrative.
