Review

You can’t always hide from the person you were born to be. This idea is explored in the new series Under York, which follows Alison Walker, a promising young painter in Manhattan. Alison is more than just a painter, she’s a witch. She and her family belong to the world of Under York, a mysterious, underground New York where five powerful clans of witches have reigned for centuries. Under York #2 digs deep into this lore and opens with Alison’s younger brother being possessed by the Babylonian demon Marduk, who plans to take over New York by transferring his soul to the next elected Mayor.

With chaos ensuing in Under York, Alison is able to learn more about her powers and her family. Writer Sylvain Runberg does an exceptional job fleshing out characters that feel real and lived in. The main protagonist, Alison, is a relatable character who has to navigate the failings of her family and her existing relationships in the real world. One of the standout aspects of this issue is its world-building. Runberg doesn’t just describe Under York; he immerses readers in its history and folklore. The Under York unfolds before the reader’s eyes in each panel. The pacing of this issue does feel slightly wonky, mainly because the issue jumps from Under York and New York often. The ancillary characters in this issue also feel out of place at first, but Runberg manages to bring them into the larger story at the end of the issue.

Runberg’s world-building is paired perfectly with art by Mirka Andolfo and colors by Piky Hamilton. The unrefined pen strokes and colors match perfectly with the underground New York aesthetic. Furthermore, the use of light and shadow creates an otherworldly ambiance, reinforcing the sense of discovery and danger that permeates the story. The character designs are distinctive, each reflecting the unique clans of Under York. I hope future issues spend more time in Under York so the stunning supernatural and cityscape art can continue.

As the series progresses, Under York promises to be more than just a thrilling adventure; it’s shaping up to be a journey of self-discovery and resilience. This issue sets a high standard for storytelling in the realm of urban fantasy comics, blending suspense with heart in equal measure.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Under York #2 is a triumph of creativity and imagination. With its compelling narrative, stunning artwork, and engaging characters, this series continues to carve out its niche in the comic book landscape. Fans of fantasy, adventure, and mystery alike will find much to love in the depths of Under York.
