Review

WELCOME BACK USAGI! After a brief tenure with IDW, everyone’s favorite samurai hare is back at Dark Horse and it just feels right. Stan Sakai’s seminal character has been entertaining readers for over 40 years. Whether it’s a crossover event or a stand-alone story, Usagi Yojimbo continues to entertain millions across the globe.

Ice and Snow picks up where “The Green Dragon” arc left off, but fear not, you do not “need” to go back for a refresher as Ice and Snow does very well in being a great jumping-on point for new fans and returning fans alike. From the first to the last panel, Stan Sakai delivers another fun and adventurous tale that makes the reader feel like they’re at camp and Stan is spinning yarn fireside.

As the story starts, Usagi and Yukichi are met on the road by a bunch of rag-tag bandits. As to be expected, our heroes make quick work of the stooges and get on with their journey. Well, as luck would have it Jei and Keiko are on their own adventure and encounter a band of misfits and quickly make themselves at home at the bandit’s expense. As the story picks up steam, Sakai is in cruise control delivering his classic brand of storytelling and visuals that we have come to know and love. Usagi Yojimbo: Ice and Snow #1 is a prime example of what makes comic books fun.

Final Thoughts

Regardless of who houses Usagi Yojimbo, the story remains the same. Simplicity in it’s greatest form, and Stan Sakai is the best at it.
