Review
The action-horror genre lives on in Zenoscope’s Van Helsing vs. Dracula’s Daughter #1, a miniseries that brings back Liesel Van Helsing for an age old clash between the descendants of true horror icons.
The first issue of Van Helsing vs. Dracula’s Daughter is a solid start to the series. It hits the ground running with an engaging mystery surrounded by the abduction of the rotting bones of none other than Dracula himself. While it might not be difficult to guess who did this considering the name of the title, it does spur our vampire huntress Van Helsing into deadly action once more. The pacing works wonders for this story, along with a sense of just not taking everything too seriously.
The book knows when to have fun with its premise and when to take it seriously. Yes, there are over-exaggerations and a few brutally violent moments, but they seem to work in favor of the story and add elements that help to make the issue more entertaining. That is the heart of what we find in Van Helsing vs. Dracula’s Daughter #1, a fun and entertaining book that is perfect for the spooky season and will hold your interest long after Halloween.
The artwork from Allan Otero and Robby Bevard brings a fluid and dynamic atmosphere to the issue helping to substantiate the more action-packed sequences. The panel of Liesel taking a dip in the Church’s holy water was just done so well, the embarrassment from the Priest is so apparent, as is her straightforward confidence. Along with some really strong letters from Taylor Esposito, we are treated to visuals that support the story in all the right ways.
While this might not be the most revolutionary series happening, it satisfies a craving for an action-packed horror series remarkably well. Van Helsing vs. Dracula’s Daughter #1 seems to understand exactly what it is thanks to a creative team who feels like they are actually having fun making the book. If you see this series on the shelves of your LCS, don’t hesitate to pick it up!
Final Thoughts
Van Helsing vs. Dracula's Daughter #1 is a book that knows when to have fun with its premise and when to take it seriously. It's a super fun, yet dark issue that is well worth your time and money!
