Recap
Issue #23! Writer Tom Sniegoski continues to weave a post-apocalyptic tale featuring a literal hell on earth as a reborn Vampirella fights against the literal forces of chaos to save humanity from its ultimate destruction!
A world ravaged by Chaos on the brink of change . . . but is it for the better?
Vampirella and Jeannine have settled into their new lives believing that they’ve found a certain kind of peace, but there is a storm brewing on the horizon, and with the storm comes . . . The Danse.
Review
This is a brutally drawn strip. It is very violent but the theme of the story makes it appropriate. The theme is a monster finding her balance. This story takes place fifteen years after Vampirella defeated Nyx. She has been spending this time with a teenage girl trying to find her balance. In her thoughts she realizes that Jeannine is her balance and now she is faced with losing that balance.
Vampirella may be an alien monster but she has more compassion than some of the humans of her world. She is devoted to her friend, she sees herself as her protector but she also finds her humanity in Jeannine.
For her part Jeannine is not afraid of Sonja. Despite her young age, she takes on the fight herself and she is not one to need to be rescued all the time despite the fact that she needs rescued at the end of this issue.
The art has a realistic flavor to it despite the horror aspects of the story. There are demons depicted and of course Vampirella herself is a vampire but the world looks believable. The wilderness looks cold with the snow on the ground and it is not a backdrop, it is used in the action. Vampirella is shown diving through the snow to get the drop on her attacker.
I appreciate the detail in Vampirella. She has moments of berserker rage and that is shown twice in this issue. When she enters this state, her eyes become completely white, the reader does not see her pupils and irises. This gives an effective visual depiction of the state of the character at this particular time.
Final Thoughts
This story brings us back to the beginning of this series. Vampirella cannot escape her past, even when that past is a ghost. What does Sebastian want or more importantly what does he want Vampirella to do?
