Eddie has a lot going on in his life right now and it is only getting worse by the minute. Venom #28 sees Eddie take on his greatest challenge yet!
Welcome to my little corner of the universe as we settle in and dissect what I just read in Venom #28 and let me tell you I was not ready for how much there is to unpack in this issue. I will be the first to admit that the last few issues of Cates’ run on this book have been hit or miss for me and in some cases, I have found that I am all alone that particular island and I totally understand. Venom #27 ended in a jaw-dropping reveal with Anne making an appearance and Eddie being completely shell-shocked along with the rest of us Venomaniacs. Well kids, buckle up ’cause the ride has just started.
Lately, we can’t talk about Venom without talking about Knull and with good cause as he is so powerful and dominating that he is bound to completely engulf any talk of anything symbiote. However, now we must talk about another monster in the Marvel Universe…Codex. Codex is here and he is one massive symbiote monster hellbent on the domination of not only people, but he will not rest until the world is his and that is exactly where we are…in his world.
Eddie finds himself thrust into battle with Anne and her cohorts against an A-List of Marvel superheroes under Codex’s service and they plan to inflict pain on whoever goes against them and their cause. Symbiotes are unforgiving and blood-crazed and can be a handful to deal with, even on a good day – now combine that with the likes of Wolverine, Sabretooth, and the Thing and you have more than a handful of problems. You have a butt-ton of problems. Although Eddie is joined by Anne, Spider-Man, Deadpool, and Cletus Kasady (yes, that Cletus Kasady) their problems are just beginning.
Doctor Octopus is the right-hand man to Codex and their pursuit to find out more about Virus and the technology in his suit. As we have already figured out, we know he has an old War Machine armor and Goblin technology, but we have yet to figure out who Virus is. Well, boys and girls hold on to your toupees because we have learned who the Virus is, and… sorry, no spoilers! And as for those of you wondering about Dylan, there have been theories aplenty on who he is and what his true powers are, in issue #28 we get the payoff that we have been waiting for!
Final thoughts on Venom #28: well Venomaniacs, I'm still taking this issue in and contemplating what this does for the book going forward. This is probably the biggest issue that Cates has written since taking over the book and is yet another example of why he belongs on the Mt. Rushmore of Venom writers.
