What You Need to Know:

What You’ll Find Out:

We open on Venom, having lost control to his Symbiote yet again, this time he’s fighting a familiar yet unfamiliar figure. Miles Morales, a Spider-man from another dimension. Miles hates Venom due to his experiences with the Ultimate universe version, which Venom begins to understand. Miles manages to subdue the Symbiote and Eddie explains to him that he needs help to fight the giant Klyntar dragon tearing apart midtown.

Miles and Eddie swing over to the battle scene with a plan, they launch a full frontal assault and the dragon seems to disintegrate with a scream. Out of the ruins of the dragon a figure walks out, the Symbiote takes over and this time Eddie lets it, the Symbiote strikes with all the force and fury it can muster, for nothing. The figure isn’t even fazed.

The end of this issue is awesome, you’ll have to discover for yourself, read Venom #3 today!

What Just Happened?

A really interesting issue that makes me want to read Ultimate Spider-man and figure out what Miles has against Eddie, the fight between them was great! The bigger picture is starting to come into focus and it’s starting to look like the payoff is around the corner. The main villain does feel a bit generic, and it really bothers me that he refers to himself as god of the symbiotes rather than god of the Klyntar, a minor nitpick but why would he refer to himself using an earth colloquialism? Also, has the god of the symbiotes seriously been imprisoned by SHIELD for who knows how long? Certainly makes me feel like if they could hold him for an extended period of time they should catch him easily enough.

No further backstory from Rex this issue, which was a bit disappointing since that was the most interesting thing from the first 2 issues in my opinion, I do maintain a Venom Squad Vietnam mini in the vein of Punisher Platoon written by Cates would be fantastic, or even a medieval Spawn type mini. I’m so curious what the symbiotes of the past might entail it almost entirely eclipses the current events.

The pencil art by Ryan Stegman is fantastic, detailed and dynamic, with the inks and colors playing a large part, the colors by Frank Martin, in particular, are very vibrant and do a lot for the fight scenes. The red backgrounds do a lot to contrast the characters, whom are all wearing black costumes and could be hard to see otherwise. I really love the panel where Miles Venom Blasts Eddie, the black silhouettes, the splatter, the sound effect, all just perfect, amazing.

Rating: 8/10

Final Thought: Might warrant a higher rating depending on how the rest of the story pans out, but I was much more impressed with the Miles vs. Venom fight than the big villain reveal. Hopefully, the villain evolves somewhere beyond menacing dialogue while casually crushing police helicopters, a step down from screaming how humans are all worms on the ruins of Avengers Mansion. Which is to say he could be Kang, the Challenger, Thanos, Loki or anyone else. Of course, on the other hand, all of those villains are iconic, and I could be reading things wrong. As a friend of mine is fond of saying, your mileage may vary.
