Review
Void Rivals #12 picks up with the aftermath of Darak and Solila’s triumphant stand against the forces that seek to destroy any evidence of their discoveries. What ensues almost feels like an “Omega” issue (like an epilogue) rather than an end to the second arc, with much of the issue pointing characters in directions yet unseen, while hinting at what may happen not only in Void Rivals’ future, but also the future of the Energon Universe. This issue perfectly recaps the eleven issues preceding it, recontextualizing the adventure, and the future, and establishing growth individually and also interpersonally between these characters.
With Void Rivals #12, everyone gets a send-off to the future that definitely feels more like a mid-season break than a season finale. This is likely because of the ongoing nature of this series; however, there is a feeling that these characters’ journeys are far from complete. Void Rivals definitely is starting to feel more and more like Robert Kirkman’s other series as each issue comes out. The adventure and never-ending scope make this story feel like it could be explored from several angles, with Void Rivals #12 seemingly setting it in that direction.
The a-plot of Void Rivals has always been about the relationship between Darak and Solila, and how they are destined to save their races and the universe through unification. Comparing their relationship in Void Rivals #12 versus the first issue shows a lot of growth between these characters while still maintaining the facets of the characters that make them unique. As these two split off and go on their own adventures, it will be amazing to see how they grow individually, and what that means for them once they reunite somewhere down the line. Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici hit the nail on the head with these characters, making this emotional goodbye feel heartwarming and earned, while also making both of their stories feel important and worth exploring.
As for the greater Energon Universe, Void Rivals has set up a lot of implications for how things are going to pan out. Yes, this issue does end on the mysterious arrival of someone or something sinister, but even before that, there are hints at what is to come. Clearly, with Solila investigating the origins of the Transformers (unintentionally), there are large implications for the universe at large, but every story here seems like it serves a greater purpose. Darak is now on a journey with Springer, who seems like he is in it for the long haul, while Hot Rod is seemingly on route to catch up with them. The most intriguing; however, has to be whatever Suxxoid is doing with the Quintessons. This has been a background plot for the entire arc, and now it seems that whatever Suxxoid has been looking for is finally retrieved. It will be interesting to see how this plays into the greater story, especially since Kirkman has such a rich history of doing crazy things behind the scenes.
Final Thoughts
Void Rivals #12 serves as an epilogue to the second arc, setting up a future that pushes the characters in all different directions with major implications to the greater universe.
