Review

Void Rivals #29 continues the Quintessen War story arc, picking up with the Aggorians and Zertonians on their last legs against a seemingly unstoppable force. Meanwhile, deep within the Sacred Ring, Zerta Trion makes a last-ditch attempt to halt the Quintesson assault, an effort that may ultimately doom the Ring’s inhabitants. All the while, agents of Cobra-La, led by Pythona, scour the battlefield after previously stumbling upon a Quintesson ship earlier in the series.

Up to this point, the arc has been heavily action-driven, with relatively little plot development. Thankfully, as the penultimate issue, it finally feels like the story is moving with purpose rather than simply sustaining the prolonged conflict of recent chapters. Whether this shift comes too late remains to be seen, but it is refreshing to watch the narrative gain momentum instead of stagnating.

From an artistic standpoint, the issue fires on all cylinders. Andrei Bressan captures the devastation of war while still maintaining the book’s more relaxed, slightly whimsical tone. After several issues, the similarities between Bressan’s work here and Ryan Ottley’s art on Kirkman’s Invincible become increasingly apparent. Much of this stems from his depiction of Minister Dulin, who now leads from the front lines rather than remaining on his throne. This shift in both setting and character dynamics highlights those comparisons in a way that ultimately benefits the series.

As the story arc edges closer to its finale, so too does the promise of a major narrative shift. The trajectory is becoming clearer, particularly as the destruction of the Sacred Ring feels more and more inevitable. The biggest hope among readers is that the next chapter will finally bring these characters closer to their counterparts in other Energon Universe titles like Transformers and G.I. Joe.
