Void Rivals #34
Recap
ROM vs. the dreaded PREDACRON — everyone's favorite bounty-hunter! Wait a minute! Whose book is this, anyway?
Review
Void Rivals #34 continues the ongoing adventures of the comic’s newest standout, ROM! As Darak, Solila, and the Cobra La agents bicker over how best to escape the planet, a fresh threat interrupts their argument, giving ROM the perfect stage to showcase his abilities. Meanwhile, the narrative cuts over to Junkion, where Skuxxoid remains in disbelief that his ship was sold. By the time the issue concludes, this sprawling cast finally converges in one location, setting up a massive cliffhanger for next month.
Longtime readers know how decompressed the series’ storytelling can be, often requiring multiple issues to deliver a fully satisfying narrative arc. This entry marks a welcome departure from that formula. By introducing a plot thread on the opening pages and paying it off before the final page, the issue delivers a self-contained story that comfortably stands on its own. Whether or not Robert Kirkman continues with this tighter structure, the altered rhythm is a refreshing change of pace.
Much of the narrative centers on a high-stakes battle against a formidable new villain, Predacron, a bounty hunter tasked by the Galactic Authorities with bringing ROM in. The confrontation moves with swift momentum, keeping the tension high while allowing the central characters room to react under pressure.
Conor Hughes proves to be the ideal artist for the job, delivering exceptional layouts and pencil work throughout the action-packed sequence. He also expertly preserves the comic’s lighthearted charm, capturing the subtle, sly expressions shared between Darak and Solila amidst the intense combat. Overall, Hughes delivers one of his finest visual offerings in the run so far.
Final Thoughts
Void Rivals #34 breaks from the series' usual slow-burn pacing to deliver a tightly contained, action-packed chapter featuring standout art from Conor Hughes and a game-changing cliffhanger.
