Review

Did you ever wonder what it would be like if the movie Police Academy was based in space and it was up to the police recruits to save the earth? Well, wonder no more because IDW has taken an interstellar trip to the world of podcasts and brought us Voyage To The Stars. The hugely popular podcast has been adapted into a comic written by Ryan Copple and James Asmus, art by Connie Daidone, colors by Reggie Graham with letters by Justin Burch rounding out the creative team.

Ryan Copple and James Asmus do not miss a beat with carrying the comedy from the podcast and bringing into the comic world. The comedy is up-front and ever-present, however, it keeps an even keel throughout the book without going overboard. The characters are likable and easy to get into as they remind you of a family gathering at Thanksgiving complete with bickering but at the end of the day, they are here for one another. Copple and Asmus keep the laughs coming at a great pace and energy that keeps the reader wanting more.

Connie Daidone’s art lends a cartoony vibe that really works well with the story and breathes life into the lovable characters of Voyage To The Stars. With a natural feel of reaction and features Daidone’s visuals reel you in with great facial features, and giving the characters the right amount of quirkiness that lends to the already crazy story that is unfolding before our eyes. Adding to the visual buffet that is this book is the amazing colors of Reggie Graham. Graham has lad magnificent purples, teals, and giving the characters what seems to be the perfect colorization for their personalities all fit together like a massive jigsaw puzzle.

Final Thoughts

Voyage to the Stars #1 is a great first issue, mixing science fiction and comedy. If you are a fan of the podcast chances are you will be a fan of the comic. If you have never heard of the podcast but like zany and over the top (but tasteful) comedy than you will like this book. It is a fun read and it is going to a fun ride with this bunch.
