Recap

The Asgardians of the Galaxy find themselves needed on Earth with a little problem called the War of the Realms! As they leap into the fray Throg realizes his pond in Central park is undefended, (they dead) just as Valkyrie (Annabelle Riggs) is reunited with her lady friend. Meanwhile Skurge makes obvious besties with Punisher, and Angela faces off against a legion of her former allies.

Review

All in all a pretty good issue, definitely the better of this week’s 2 War of the Realms books, my main complaint is although it feels organic to have this series tie in this is the second big event it has tied into within these first 8 issues. This series thus far has done nothing to establish a voice or motivation of it’s own, which is no fault of the creators, who have managed to make a pretty solid series despite all that. Decent legwork by series scribe Cullen Bunn.

The issue is pretty organically woven into the War of the Realms and once the heroes reach Earth a lot of fun occurs. Everything from Cap giving Thunderstrike an ego boost to Skurge and Frank Castle exchanging guns, not to mention Annabelle reuniting with her girlfriend only to be risked away as Valkyrie due to the war’s high death toll. Hilariously out of tone with the rest of the issue is the tragedy at Throg’s pond, charred frog corpses litter the park, luckily some fire goblins appear to satisfy his warrior madness! I do love a team book that manages to utilize every member of their team, which is rare, Bunn does so with aplomb.

The art, by the returning series regular artist Matteo Lolli with colors by Federico Blee, is phenomenal, multiple fantastic splash pages help showcase the broad scale of the titanic battle being fought and all the characters look solid. I actually really like the last panel of the first page which is just a roster shot, the team looks great. So cool.

Final Thoughts

The more times I read this issue the more I like it. Good fun.
