War of the Realms: Deadpool #14: Later Nerds!

The conclusion to Deadpool’s War of the Realms tie-in is about as informative as you could imagine from a story focused on Wade Wilson. It’s got a few laughs and even some epic battles, but you will undoubtedly be asking yourself “why?” by the time it ends.

Strangely enough, the pointless nature of the comic is actually its strongest aspect. Universe shattering comic events like War of the Realms are notorious for spawning dozens of nonessential tie-in stories that ultimately feel like filler content. While there are some gems among them, we as readers often shrug them off as unimportant and jump right into the main arc. So why shouldn’t Deadpool?

The ending is a not-so-subtle nod at the overall purpose of these tie-ins and what readers can expect from them. Deadpool has had his fun over the last couple of issues and even he understands the answers we want won’t come until the War of the Realms main book. His premature exit is a near-perfect representation of the feeling these tie-in books often leave us with. Fun, but unnecessary.

Taking on industry issues like this offer great opportunities for Deadpool as a character. His penchant for breaking the fourth wall suits this purpose uniquely well, but Skottie Young shows his ability to utilize the character with a hilarious story that provides some context for tie-in issues in general. It’s another well-rounded comic that takes humor, action and just a bit of insight and combines them in a way that is just damn enjoyable.

Nic Klein continues to impress on artwork as well, helping the story to really stand on its own. The illustrations and colors are some of the best you can find currently at Marvel. He is giving us a definitive look at the character with each new issue.

Overall, Deadpool #14 is hilariously pointless, and that’s just fine by me.
