War of the Realms: Giant Man #1
Recap
War of the Realms: Giant Man begins with a plot hatched by Freyja for one simple purpose; revenge! Her reasoning being if new Frost Giants are being created/ reborn (like Laufey) then their god/ progenitor Ymir must be on Midgard. The four Giant Men have one mission, infiltrate and kill Ymir. Simple, right?
Review
I don’t hate this issue but it has some failings. From the core idea of the book, Giant Men killing Ymir seems like hot nonsense, as Odin himself wasn’t up for to the task for literally thousands of years, why would a handful of unusually tall humans be the next choice with literal gods on the payroll? Or better yet where’s that orbital UV cannon Tony hit the Hulk with way back in Immortal Hulk #7, that thing could def kill a 200 foot tall Frost Giant god. What could 4 Giant Men possibly bring to the table?
Regarding the team, I was really excited to see Atlas, being a big Thunderbolts fan (Justice, Like Lightning!). I was a bit less excited for the others, obviously I know Lang somewhat and he’s the movie Ant Man, but I have no idea who the Indian Ant Man is and this book didn’t do much to tell me. Likewise Tom Foster is a grade-a dick for basically no reason the entire issue, maybe he’s still mad his uncle was killed by Robot Thor in Civil War? Either way this entire issue if he opens his mouth it’s something rude and off base.
All that said on to the positive, I thought the moment where they were all sizing up and one teammate didn’t add up was hilarious, although the majority of the team sizing up to exactly frost giant size feels a bit too convenient. The way the team is ousted from cover is pretty clever and I liked everyone shrinking and jumping in Raz Malhotra’s (currently the #3 most googled name globally maybe probably) pocket with him being the fastest because he’s in better shape, that’s funny.
I just wasn’t very impressed with this issue in general, it’s not bad by any means the art is good for the most part there are just many many flaws that I have trouble looking past. I was very excited to hear a Giant Man title was coming, maybe my expectations were too high.
Final Thoughts
Definitely a skippable tie in, unless they manage to actually succeed, which would make this 3 issue series pivotal in Thor canon, I doubt that will happen.
