War of the Realms: Spider-Man and the League of Realms #1
Recap
Spider-man and the League of Realms split for a little while so we can find out why whatserface the angel (her actual name, I looked it up) hates Malekith. Turns out Malekith killed her lady friend for a laugh one time. Gotcha. While this is all revealed the main League goes to Paris and gets their butts stomped by former teammate turned unwilling Kurse host Waziria.
Review
Another one of those issues that gets less good the more you think about it. I do feel like the characters are written well enough it just seems like certain events happen that seem ridiculous when you think of them. For instance the League of Realms travels from Nigeria clear to France? How long of a drive is that? Did they even take a car? Nonsense. Also bothersome is Fernande’s (the angel, i looked her name up) entire army just changing sides at the drop of a hat, so odd. Likewise Spidey basically victim shaming the League for wanting to attack Malekith more directly annoyed me, and his line about pain made him sound like a petulant child. These are soldiers who have lost their homes, in some cases their families, their rights, and the guy responsible is (apparently) a short drive away. Spidey seems to be the jerk in my opinion.
The Kurse scenes were decent, Waziria was forced into being Kurse during the Jane Foster Thor run (wanna say it’s #14 or so) following Malekith’s official coronation as King of the Dark Elves. Basically long story short Malekith was sentenced to a prison sentence in hell but once he was officially king he could choose a subject to fill his place in the Spiders of Hel’s prison and he chose the League of Realms’ Svartalfheim representative (as initially Malekith was working against his own realm’s interest as well, but eventually won the favor of the dark elven high council of the unhallowed) Waziria to replace him, then used that same power to make her Kurse in place of Algrim the strong. I’ve been hoping we would get some resolution to the first a couple years now so I’m glad it’s finally wrapping up.
The art by Nico Leon is fine albeit a bit cartoonish at points, I don’t like the way he draws Ud, Screwbeard or the angels. His Spider-man looks fine but his hidden facial features might help that. The action scenes are a bit hard to follow from a progression standpoint and little things like when Ro is facing off with the army i wasn’t sure if he was blocking bullets, absorbing them, throwing them aside or what, I don’t recall seeing anything like this from him before, and honestly he’s a bit chatty compared to before.
Final Thoughts
I'm so torn between what basically equates to League of Realms fanservice (is that a thing) and story problems I don't like. I want to like this issue badly but I don't.
