War of the Realms: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #44: Things Happen kinda

This unbelievably dense issue was a bit of a chore to read, with every panel containing what felt like 6 paragraphs of dialogue. I liked the nod to continuity involving Ratatoskr’s escape from Asgard during Mangog’s assault, I just didn’t really feel like any of the humor landed for me. As a War of the Realms issue this was a bit of a letdown as well despite featuring a decent cast.

As this is my second ever issue of Squirrel Girl I don’t want to be too harsh as I am so clearly not the target demographic for this series, maybe the goal is to get kids reading and that’s why this issue has about as much dialogue as late 80s Marv Wolfman writing? I know some might consider that a compliment and maybe they should but my point is this density seems to serve no perceivable purpose that I can tell.

The art is cartoony but that’s kind of the point, Mangog looks fantastic though, as does Ratatoskr. Those aren’t easy character designs to replicate and they stay on model anywhere they appear so I will judge by those rather than the simplistic art in the rest of the issue.

I don’t like the cover much for some reason.
