Recap

We Are Legends, part of the year-long Dawn of DC storytelling initiative, is set to make a major impact on the comics industry this May, with the launch of three six-issue series: Spirit World, The Vigil, and City Boy. Each feature new characters of AAPI heritage, as leads of their own books! Earlier this year, these heroes first made their presence known across the DC Universe in the Lazarus Planet epic. In the newly announced Dawn of DC We Are Legends Special Edition promotional comic book, you can meet City Boy in a story that first appeared in Lazarus Planet: Legends Reborn, get to know Xanthe and their unique mission in a Spirit World tale from Lazarus Planet: Dark Fate, and receive intel on the mysterious organization known as the Vigil in an excerpt from Lazarus Planet: Next Evolution, All three short stories are included in this comic, providing everything readers need to know to jump on board Spirit World, The Vigil, and City Boy starting in May.

Review

We Are Legends is a fresh and imaginative introduction to incoming characters in the DC Universe. A collection of three stories, this comic should definitely be picked up at your LCS.

Introducing Spirit World, City Boy, and the Vigil, this comic expands on the characters who first appeared in the recent Lazarus event. Each story feels like a fun teaser to the larger narrative, and they all have their own distinct tone: Spirit World has the most action, Vigil is like a thriller, and City Boy has a unique power set for a new character.

Comics like these have a particular goal: to get readers excited for the next batch of stories hitting shelves and digital comic outlets. Despite acting as previews, the different stories felt compelling, and the interaction between new characters and members of the Bat-Family was an unexpected but well-done move.

The first story follows Xanthe, a magic-powered being with a giant sword whose story covers an action-filled battle at a cemetery with Batgirl (Cassandra Cain). Because of the infusion of magic into the story, a fan-favorite warlock appears suitable as the story ends for the time being.

The next story begins with Red Hood exploring an abandoned ship. While the action is expected, the tension of a quiet fleet matches the conspiracy genre of the upcoming Vigil title. The espionage is refreshing and well serves the ensemble of this new team.

The third story has a meta-human searching for a crown. City Boy’s power sets are unique in that there is this connection to cities and abilities to morph through physical objects such as streets. This makes for a challenge for Nightwing and a fun sandbox of ways these powers can be utilized.

The only minor criticism is the connection to the Universe is entirely focused on the Bat-Family. While this isn’t a bad thing, it does feel slightly limiting for new characters, as the DC roster of characters is nothing short of expansive.

That being said, it is likely part of a bigger plot, so for now, there is a pass as time will tell if more established characters get to interact with these new legends.

DC comics fans should pick up this issue as each story feels exciting and fresh and part of the DC Universe. The writing and art production of each story is well done. There is no disconnect and what will likely be a great new wave of characters for DC fans.

Final Thoughts

Definitely check out this issue at your LCS. The stories, art, and entire product are top notch.
