Review
What If…? Donald Duck Became Thor #1, the latest Marvel and Disney collaboration the 90th anniversary of Disney’s iconic duck and replaces Donald Blake in Thor’s origin from Journey Into Mystery #83.
The issue’s story is framed with Donald and his nephews in Norway to earn the elusive Junior Woodchuck Ancient Viking Relic badge, and in classic fashion, Donald injures himself, giving him the Donald Blake limp and need for a walking stick.
The story hits all the right beats of the original, adding in classic Donald moments making the story unique using the What If…? twist. The addition of the final scene as Donald reunites with his nephew also adds an extra touch to the story, leaving the window open to the possibility of more Thor-Donald stories down the road.
This issue is stronger storywise then the Wolverine/Donald Duck issue and flows better overall since it is a retelling of the origin story and not a random mismash of stories points.
The art and coloring in the issue are top-notch as the Thor-Donald design incorporated the classic design with a modern edge and the duck-ification of the aliens works further immersing the readers into the Marvel/Disney amalgamated universe.
Final Thoughts
What If…? Donald Duck Became Thor #1 is a fun reimaging and amalgamation of these two characters and masterful use of What If? storytelling.
