Review
The question of a superhero taking over the herald of the Devourer of Worlds continues this week in What If…? Galactus Transformed Rogue? #1. Taking over scribe duties for this installment is Ann Nocenti who leans into her work on the X-Men, placing the Southern belle Rogue in the role of Galactic Emissary.
The setup for this scenario begins with Surfer and Galactus once again sparing over the potential for life on a planet about to be Devourer, with Galactus ultimately winning out and becoming fed up with Silver Surfer and unceremoniously relieving him of his duties. A young Rogue, whose powers have yet to manifest, finds the Silver Surfer and while trying to resuscitate him, absorbs his powers and becoming Galactus’ gopher without being given a choice. It was a nice touch to see her learn about Surfer and the role she finds now finds herself in. Nocenti also does a nice job of establishing where Rogue is at this time in her journey.
As Rogue takes to the stars, the X-Men make cameos, noticing that something big has changed in their lives that will never be now, the most impactful one being Mystique and Destiny. The rest of the issue finds Rogue trying to get out of this role she finds herself in and is a bit heavy on the dialogue but works as the art and color work help keep the story flowing along with Rogue’s sassy retorts to Galactus.
Rogue’s herald design is simple and sleek, and doesn’t distract from the story being told. Artist Stephen Bryne uses some interesting and dynamic perspectives throughout which add to the overall feel of the issue.
