Winter Soldier #3

Recap
Broken people often find other broken people to put the pieces together. More often than not, this just leads to more broken pieces. Bucky is on a mission to atone from his past by giving other people a second chance in life, and rewriting the wrongs of broken choices.
Review
RJ recovers from his wound while Bucky looks after him. As time passes, we are brought to RJ in therapy. Most people who have gone through trauma find it hard to trust, and even become guarded. Being a teenager doesn’t help though…
After RJ’s session is finished, we learn that Bucky is also in therapy keeping a journal. It mentions how hard it is to be honest with himself, despite the fact that he is the only one who will be reading it. RJ overhears their conversation, and like any rebellious teenager, they read what was not meant for them.
Bucky takes RJ on a mission because one of Bucky’s clients believes he is being tailed. Seth wasn’t wrong about his paranoia, he was made. RJ spots something in the forest. It’s the Spot, who has been sent to kill Seth. After a short battle, RJ and the Winter Soldier are victorious. “You’re a lair” RJ confronts Bucky after reading his diary. RJ learns that life isn’t perfect and it never will be. It will be hard to atone for any sins. RJ doesn’t want to be a killer and Bucky still suffers as he continues to have nightmares, How can life get any better? Life isn’t perfect, things do get better. “Good and bad will come”, Bucky tells a young RJ. Bucky explains that he doesn’t have to do this alone. Back home, they are welcomed by a stranger. A stranger that just changed their lives.
Final Thoughts
I love that I never know what is coming in this heartbreaking issue. RJ is healing in more ways than one, not just physically, but also his mind and heart. Wounds are so much easier to heal than the heart. Rod Reis does an amazing job bringing these complex emotions to life and Higgin's writing is putting a ton of heart into this project. Rod brings Higgins story to life making this the perfect mini-series.
