Review

The mind of Logan is a beautiful thing. There’s more going on up there than an Amazon warehouse at Christmastime, so it only makes sense to introduce a new villain for Wolverine to romp around with while searching for the Sword of Muramasa. Wolverine #6 has all the ingredients for a solid book not only to continue the Wolverine continuity but stand on its own in the “X of Swords” saga.

There is only one way to start a Wolverine book and that is to have him crawl from the fiery pits of Hell. From the opening panel to the last Benjamin Percy has his foot firmly planted on the gas pedal and does not let it off for one second. It is abundantly clear that Percy has settled in for the long haul with this series and selfishly I hope he stays on for a long while.

There are parts that remind me of those classic Wolverine books that have Logan locked in and determined to claim his prize and very little if anything will stop him. Viktor Bogdanovic and Matthew Wilson team up on art and colors adding to the ferocious storytelling with solid visuals that succeed with providing approving head nods and excitement for waits on the next page. At times, the panels feel odd but that may be more on my side of things as overall this is well done through and through.

We already know Krakoa is pissed because of the gate being closed (see X-Factor #4) so what is Wolverine to do but poke the proverbial bear and pretty much tell Krakoa to stick it where the sun doesn’t’ shine and essentially blaming Krakoa for the current state of affairs. Having fully accepted his spot in the tournament, Logan sets out in search of the Sword of Muramasa.

The fun thing about tournaments is the competition that you are bound to run in to. Enter Solem. With wanting to remain light on the spoilers I will not go into too much detail regarding Wolverine’s newest nemesis but the upswing on Solem and Wolverine’s future looks bright and devastating. Solem has been chosen as a representative for X of Swords and is on the trail of Wolverine. One of my favorite things about the clawsome mutant is his tracking ability and the fact that you will have to put in overtime if you are going to one-up him. Wolverine #6 hits on all cylinders with promises of great issues to come.

Final Thoughts

I am enjoying Benjamin Percy on Wolverine, I guess it helps that I quite enjoy both, but I digress. Issue #6 really does a great job of capturing Logan in his best form. We see him stand up to Krakoa, get a trip through his mind, see his determination on display. Now there were times that the book felt cramped on the pages but as I said previously, that probably lies more with me. Introducing a new character, especially a villain is always exciting and Solem definitely has a creepiness to him that I cannot wait to see how he plays out.
