Review

Wonder Woman #6 is the most vicious and bloody entry in Tom King’s run. It pushes Diana Prince to her limits and has one of the more brutal fights as of late. It’s not to be missed!

The issue begins with Diana and Steve Trevor talking near the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. Within the first few panels, Dr. Psycho’s telepathic control over Steve is revealed as Giganta’s hand explodes from the ground behind them. It’s an epic start and one that doesn’t stop until the last page.

If there is one thing that is appreciated (and there is a lot to be appreciated), is how much care there is regarding Wonder Woman’s character traits and her legacy. Previous issues have included subtle references to her 80 year history and this issue includes a nice nod to the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman series from the 70s. The reference happens rather early as the action picks up and the battle begins amongst American architecture.

Throughout this run, so much has been thrown at the warrior princess and some of the toughest challenges present themselves in this issue. It’s an excellent payoff considering it is the end of the “Outlaw” arc where readers have seen many of the core values of Wonder Woman: honor, kindness, and giving of ones time.

Writer Tom King throws a lot at Diana in this issue but does so without over complicating the script. Instead, it’s similar to a well-crafted game where progress means the battle gets harder and harder. So much so that by the end of the issue, Wonder Woman isn’t fighting Giganta, instead it’s an adversary who makes the fight all the more of a challenge.

The epic scale of this issue is perfectly presented by artist Daniel Sampere and colorist Tomeu Morey. Wonder Woman’s strength is on full display and each CRACK and CLANK is really felt from the pages as blood and rain soak the ground. The effects are elevated from the lettering by Clayton Cowles, whose work keeps the narration well placed while balancing the dialogue from the characters.

While the core of the story is violent, Tom King’s back up story on Trinity is a light hearted story and one that gives readers some fresh air after the spectacle they just witnessed. Belen Ortega (artist) and Alejandro Sanchez (colorist) lend their skills to the story and assist with the charm of Damian Wayne and Jon Kent trying to get young Trinity to FINALLY go to sleep—an experience many parents will immediately resonate with.

Final Thoughts

This issue is such a well balanced experience and readers who have been following this run will definitely feel like it’s a grand ending to the first arc. There is still much of the journey ahead, but readers will have to wait until Wonder Woman #8 releases to see what happens next.
