Wonder Woman learns the hard way that fairies are never to be trusted when her promised trip home takes a sharp left turn in the Multiverse! Welcome to Earth-11, headquarters of the Justice Guild. In this alternate version of Diana’s Earth, the Amazons of Themyscira imposed their law on the entire world, and the course of history was changed forever! Sounds like a dream afterlife for our hero, but Janus has somehow managed to poison this paradise. Dane of Elysium, a.k.a. Wonder Man, is on a violent rampage, and it’s now up to Wonder Woman to bring him in and clear her name!
Back on Earth-0, Young Diana learns the real story behind the creation of Paradise Island and the price paid for freedom. Will she ever trust the elders again? Or are the lies too much for the princess to handle?
Review
Chapter eight of Wonder Woman’s trek across the multiverse, and she ends up on Earth-11, a world that’s populated by the Justice Guild, where the members are of the opposite sex (Superwoman, Batwoman, Marsha Manhunter, etc.) from the world we’ve become accustomed to. Diana enlists these familiar, yet different heroes to aid her in her quest to capture the rogue goddess, Janus. Janus frees Earth-11’s Wonder Man, a male version of Diana.
This issue was a different type of animal than the previous seven, as it takes place on alternate earth, rather than an alternative afterlife, and I’m living for it. DC’s lack of use of their new multiverse since the beginning of the Rebirth era has been a sore spot for me, but I’m glad to see them finally take advantage of it here.
Clooney and Conrad continue to build up Diana for this new age, and they’re not afraid to shake things up by putting the Princess in situations that we’re not used to seeing her in since George Perez rebooted her after the Crisis. They’ve also added some great new additions to her supporting cast with Siggy and Ratatosk, while bringing Janus in as a new adversary. Also I LOVE Wonder Man. He reminds me of the Dr. Psycho construct, Captain Wonder, from Roy Thomas and Gene Colan’s far too short run in the early ’80s.
Joining Clooney and Conrad is Emanuela Lupacchino on art duties, and it is absolutely breathtaking. E-Lup’s take on Diana is magical, and has been an artistic highlight in this post-Rebirth era. Everything she does looks amazing, and the same holds true here. Jordie Bellaire’s colors really compliments E’s pencils here. Wonder Woman and Siggy look great here, as do the ladies of Justice Guild. Hopefully we’ll be seeing E-Lup again.
Also, back on Earth-0, Bellaire and Ganucheau continue bringing us along this journey to Diana’s past. It looks like this journey is going to shed some light on a deeply held secret that Queen Hippolyta has kept from Diana and the rest of the Amazons. I’m a little leery of the team taking this route. It often leads to a path that makes the parental figures quite toxic afterwards. I have hope that this won’t turn out badly like it has for others.
Final Thoughts
Clooney and Conrad continue on this journey that looks to reshape Wonder Woman and bring her into the 21st century. They’re using the multiverse to their advantage and giving birth to a new world for the rest of the DCU to explore. Hopefully other creators take this opportunity to follow suit. This is the most fun I’ve had reading Wonder Woman in quite a long time.
