Wonder Woman #786: We are the Champions, My Friend…

The trial has just begun, and already we see our four champions fighting for their lives. There’s an explosion which separates the contestants from their tribes of Amazons, and no one knows what’s going on, or where they’re at. There’s also a malevolent force who’s slowly corrupting the Amazons who are on Themyscira. While the champions struggle to find their way free, they come face to face with the mother of all monsters, and the ante has been upped for all involved. 

CloonRad and the rest of the Wonder team have set up these warriors at the precipice of this new era for the Amazons, so where will we go from here? How will the events from this crossover affect the rest of the DCU? Will the events of this storyline have any bearing on Dark Crisis, and the impending deaths of the Justice League? Who knows! The story has been on fire since the beginning, and I hope CloonRad and the rest of the Wonders can keep giving us the level of quality we’ve become accustomed to. 

Rosi Kampe and Becky Cloonan are on art chores this month, and their styles mesh well with each other. The scenes in the tomb evoke a sense of menace and macabre, and the environment that befits the stakes that our heroes are up against. The layers these ladies give to the various factions of Amazons are both powerful and vulnerable, while bringing a sense of fantasy to the mythological creatures that are a part of this world. 

The CloonRad writing team has breathed new life into Diana’s world, and has created quite the interest for these amazing and wonderful characters, bringing both new villains that evokes the fantastic silver age oddities, like the Image-Maker, and his glass golem Wonder Women, but also mythological figures like Janus, and Echidna to this run, and it’s just been an absolute blast. I can’t wait to see what else they’ll bring to this book.
