Wonder Woman #795
Recap
As trouble continues to mount in Olympus, Wonder Woman begins to understand that the gods have taken a particular interest in mortals for the first time in centuries. Now, with her new partner, Wonder Girl Yara Flor, she hopes to defend Man’s World from whatever the immortal beings are preparing…but will these Wonder Women be enough?
Review
We left off last issue with Yara Flor joining Wonder Woman’s side against the god Eros. I quite like Yara, but I know she’s been a bit divisive among the fandom. And I can definitely hear the “Where’s Cassie/Donna?” cries coming. And yes, it would’ve been great to see all of the Wonder Girls help out Diana here, but Yara has an intimate past with Eros so it’s fitting to see the bulk of the issue dedicated to the pair’s interactions.
There’s a lot of action in this issue, with everyone getting a chance to shine. From Steve Trevor’s heroic attack on Hyperion to Diana and Yara laying the beatdown on Eros, fans of action are sure to be pleased with the issue. We also get more development of Hera’s overarching plots. Hera’s plan is pretty predictable but never boring. We ultimately get a cliffhanger that, again, we’ve seen done before yet still feels fresh and exciting.
We haven’t seen Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad use Yara Flor very often, so I was impressed with how much of her characterization and voice felt so consistent with the Wonder Girl ongoing series that recently came to an end. The pair also continue to elevate Diana’s rogues gallery, with Eros firmly joining the ranks in this issue. As for the art by Amancay Nahuelpan, his pencils really worked for a lot of the action shots. There were a few panels that felt a bit inconsistent (with the “Hola!” panel of Diana looking particularly… demonic?), but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Final Thoughts
Wonder Woman has a lot on her plate for the "Before the Storm" story arc, so it's only fitting that she calls in some help from the newest Wonder Girl, Yara Flor. While some fans might have wished for Cassie or Donna, the issue did a great job presenting the conflict between Yara and the manipulative god Eros.
