Collected together for the first time, these backup stories by Eisner Award-winner Jordie Bellaire and rising star Paulina Ganucheau provide an intimate look into Wonder Woman’s upbringing and dangerous secrets of her past you’ll never forget!

Review

I have to admit, I didn’t pay too much attention to these Young Diana backups in the main Wonder Woman title singles. The art was cute and whimsical, but I wanted to wait until it was collected in TPB format. Well, here we get all of the issues reprinted in a delightful little Special, and I’m thrilled that we can enjoy the Adventures of Young Diana in its entirety.

If I haven’t said it before, I’m a continuity nut, so I’m always overjoyed when old or forgotten continuity is brought up. Thankfully, Jordie Bellaire does just this with most of Themyscira. The Amazons are mostly all pre-existing ones (largely from the Perez era). We of course have Hippolyta and Philippus, but there’s also Clio, Oenone, Hellene, Magala, and more! And Jumpa! By Jove, there’s Jumpa! Each of the Amazons are given distinct and diverse looks which is always welcome.

The art by Paulina Ganucheau with colors by Kendall Goode perfectly fits the story Bellaire has written. There’s a very Young Adult aesthetic that I think will be enjoyed by many younger audiences, even if the title is supposedly 13+.

The best part of it all is that there is more to come in 2022! I truly hope the entire creative team returns for more Young Diana, as there was no weak link in the bunch. I’d love to see an exploration of Doom’s Doorway, or Young Diana test her mettle against Medusa or another mythological adversary. Just keep these adventures coming!

Final Thoughts

It's such a wonderful time to be a Wonder Woman fan, as we're able to not only have an amazing solo title by Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad, we're able to explore more of what makes Diana and her world tick. The Adventures of Young Diana is a perfect entryway for young Wonder Woman fans to read more about this loving and compassionate superhero.
