Wonder Women: Agent of Peace #3: Planned Extinction

The way that Amanda Connor and Jimmy Palmiotti have taken charge of writing Wonder Woman and intermingling a serious side and mixing in her humor while showing her humanity has been brilliant. The stories continue to be a magic carpet ride of what Wonder Woman fans want in their stories. I believe “Planned Extinction” is in its own category with regards to what we have read so far. Having Diana’s humanity take center stage was well-executed and really-fun to read. Seeing Daniel Sampere and Juan Albarran’s version of Gorilla City stands out on its own as panel after panel comes to life to be a perfect aid in telling the story. At the beginning of the book we get to see the lighter side of Diana and Steve as they attempt to enjoy some needed time off and away from saving the world, however that only lasts temporarily.

There is a bit where Steve comments on how he is surprised there is not a resort just for superheroes to relax and take in some self-care. Here is where it gets a bit dicey. Etta calls and warns them that there is an asteroid that is on course to be a cataclysmic disaster. Wonder Woman to the rescue! Now reading about the potential end of the world disasters are nothing new to storytelling. Much like with seasoning food, you can choose to serve it bland or spice it up and make it interesting, and that is exactly what Connor and Palmiotti do. Having Wonder Woman offset the asteroid and feel that she has saved the world only to find out she has made a big mess of the situation. Here is where good storytelling happens. We not only see Wonder Woman wanting to right her wrong but dig deeper into the true destination of where the beast should be going and make sure that the proper sentence carried out.  The engagement between the beast and Diana makes for some great soul searching and how we deal with adversity especially when you are a demigod and pride yourself in your ability to remain level headed and wanting the world to be its best self.
