Recap

Twenty years ago, at the height of the Monday Night Wars, WWE debuted their second weekly two-hour wrestling show, Smackdown on the UPN Network. 20 years and 1,050 episodes later (I think I've only missed 2), Smackdown is set to become the WWE's flagship show when it moves to FOX on October 4!!

Review

In this special, writer Kevin Panetta celebrates the past, present, and future of WWE Smackdown, as it’s about to make its big shift to network television. This issue features a great mix of WWE superstars past and present, and features and both A and B storylines are equally entertaining. Everyone Superstars dialogue is spot-on, none of them break character and the story progresses very naturally, Panetta does a great job of guiding the story where it wants to go without pushing or pulling it in awkward ways. My only complaint is that the main character that we follow in this story isn’t a Superstar that’s featured on Smackdown. Yes, Panetta uses a vehicle to get her there, but I think it would’ve meant just a little bit more if he’d have used someone on the Smackdown roster.

Artists Kendall Goode & Serg Acuna are fantastic!! They shine this issue by capturing both the spirit and likeness of the WWE Superstars in this issue, which is a hard thing to do. They do a great job on everything else, too. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to draw a crowd of sports fans, but they sure pull it off. Now add in the amazing coloring jobs done by Serg Acuna & Danny Sanchez Chavez-imagine how hard it must be to color that crowd and Jim Campbell’s letters and you’ve got an all-out awesome comic book. One worthy of the 20-year history that made it possible.

Final Thoughts

A great creative team and some of the most popular wrestlers of the past and the present make this issue a great read. Is it worth your $5? You know it!
