Year Zero #1: Hunting for Clues

Throughout Year Zero #1, we are introduced to the characters, and their personalities, and not the same old zombie story where the world is already messed up and there is tons of gratuitous gore that is hap-hazardously blotted on the page, instead we get a book that focuses on the characters, their worlds, and what they are dealing with. This feels like a labor of love from writer Ben Percy and it clearly shows with how he sets the characters up for what feels like much bigger plans in future issues. Meticulously taking his time to build a world not yet overrun with zombies or some sort of virus that has decimated communities but slowing revving the creative engine and preparing for a high-speed story that we have come to know from Percy.

Year Zero is not like other zombie stories as you barely see any in issue one. Instead you get action in brief shots and it works gloriously! Percy has a great hold on what makes a great story, understanding the elements that set off your imagination and send chills down your spine. As with any great story you must have great visuals. Enter Ramon Rosanas. Rosanas steps away from the standard horror art and elevates this book to another level. The way Ramon’s art comes through its almost tells the story without words with its panels are littered with subtle details that bring the book to life. The creative team behind Year Zero has come up with a great recipe for delivering a horror comic and makes it seem like a typical horror comic. Slow build-ups supported by phenomenal art and inks makes me wonder if AWA will stop at five issues. This book is exceptional and not to be missed!
