Recap

Mike Mignola (Creator of Hellboy) returns to penning this four-issue story. Telling the journey of a young Hellboy -  and if you know anything about this character, you know that Hellboy has always struggled to get the respect of his fellow teammates because of his looks and his actions at times.

Review

I will say, for someone coming in fresh and not knowing what the story is, you get caught up quickly in the first few pages. We start off with Hellboy talking to some of his fellow agents who are just looking at him like he set off a fart in the middle of Sunday service. Hellboy tells you who he thinks is evil, why he thinks they are evil, and tells you the entire story while eating and feeding his dog. I will say this is a genius because now you don’t feel lost, nor do you feel the pressure of not reading because you did not pick up the first two issues.

Then we skip to the island where we spend the rest of the issue, and this is where we get the bad guy explaining his master plan, and we see the setup for the endgame of the story. Smitty is injured and in need of help after being shot. Santiago, who is with him, brings the doctor the key he has been waiting for, and even though she has a bad feeling, she still accepts the doctor’s help because she wants to make sure that Smitty will be okay.

While questioning herself as to whether she did the correct thing or not, Smitty is downstairs in the doctor’s lab, where the doctor reveals his true intentions and plunges a needle into her neck. When Santiago begins to have dinner, she becomes so disturbed by the way that the doctor is talking that when she sees Smitty, she says it is time for them to leave, and that is when Smitty reveals he has been changed by the doctor and now she is in grave danger of being the next to see the light.

The Ghost Leopard is on the island as well, and he is pursuing the doctor and the agents. He gets caught by a race called the Devils Swarm, who have told him that an evil has come back to the devils’ place. This leaves Ghost Leopard shocked and surrounded by the Devils Swarm, not knowing what to expect from them and not knowing if they are friends or foes.

Final Thoughts

The penultimate issue breezes by, and as the reader, I feel the danger almost immediately when we go to the island after the Hell Boy recap (Which I genuinely appreciate). I can look at the doctor and tell he is off; I know Smitty is screwed, and Santiago will need backup as soon as possible. The glimmer of hope is that Ghost Leopard and the Devil's Swarm are on the island as well, who I feel will play a crucial role in the final part of this story. I have always loved a good penultimate episode or issue, and for me this delivers. I would highly recommend picking this issue up, as I will be picking up the first two issues and going all the way with this story.
