Recap

Young Hellboy comes to an end with part four of the story they have been telling this year. If you remember from last issue, Smitty was corrupted by the big bad while taking Santiago hostage. Meanwhile, Ghost Leopard gained some allies and was heading to the final destination to put an end to the Ujarak.

Review

I really like the beginning of these books where we get a chance to see Hellboy, and he is excited as he tells the story. I also love how he says he should get some rest but decides he must know the end of the story, so he will read really slowly to make it last. I like the writing here; it is fun and brings me back to when I was younger. I would know if a show is about to hit its season finale or even the series finale. I would go from speeding through the show to slowing down to savor every minute.

To this day, I still do that with mediums such as video games. Once I see the endgame nearing, I slow down my play. I don’t think it works, but you have to try. We pick up right where we left off, with Santiago in a world of trouble and nowhere to go. She starts talking to Smitty, and to my surprise, he responds. Which is interesting, so he knows who he is, but he has been corrupted by the “light,” so I am assuming he does not have his free will? This is never addressed, and that is on purpose in my opinion.

Once the key unlocks the Ujarak, it is not what they think will happen. The Ujarak come out and start killing everyone. Even though they beg and say that they want to serve them, these mindless insects are after one thing, and that is the key that freed them. Smitty is aware enough to free Santiago, and that is when Ghost Leopard comes to the rescue. He grabs the key, throws it to Santiago, and tells her to run and destroy it. Which she does, but not without a little bit of drama.

Her plane is destroyed, but the key is gone and so is the Ujarak. In a quick mention, we find out that Smitty did not make it, and then Santiago apologizes to Ghost Leopard for thinking he was the bad guy. All is forgiven as the story comes to an end at sunset.

Final Thoughts

Alright, so, something that was really obvious from this issue was that it was being told from the perspective of a kid. With all the “Gosh”, “Darns”, etc. Not a knock, just extremely noticeable. There wasn’t any action; the suspense was all in the final plane ride, if you can call it that. This issue felt like it was meant to be read by all ages and to wrap up as quickly as possible. As far as the story goes, it is fine. If you are a Hellboy fan, I think it is a nice addition to the catalog, but nothing that, if you miss it, you will regret.
