Young Justice #5
Gemworld rips in half as Dark Opal battles the teen heroes of Young Justice as this huge, in-continuity epic continues. While Robin, Amethyst, Impulse, Teen Lantern and Superboy fight for their freedom, the secrets of Jinny Hex, Jonah Hex's great-great-granddaughter, are revealed-and it is a DC Universe doozy!
Young Justice #5 is the comic we have all been waiting on since the series was announced. The team is united and we finally begin to uncover some answers regarding the continuity of these characters.
Bendis and company have been working towards this issue for a while now, plotting intricate steps to reintroduce the series canonically into DC Comics once again. Many fans had questioned how this could be done especially when black leather jacket Superboy showed up, but it appears we are now delving into that very topic and the answer is one that is all too familiar to comics…
This is more than likely not very surprising, but what’s more important anyway is how they handle such a story. We find out that a few days ago, Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown had a run-in with Zatanna where they discussed the potentials of alternate timelines. This is when they discover the old Young Justice team and Tim’s entirely other life that he has somehow repressed all this time. This is the biggest plot point regarding DC’s continuity that the creative team has explored yet, and while it isn’t exactly much, it does show a willingness to provide critical answers about the formation of this new iteration of Young Justice.
Aside from the nicely done classic comic tropes surrounding other realities, the issue also is just a lot of fun. We see the team take on Lord Opal of the Gemworld, which actually turns out to be hilarious thanks to Impulse and his quick thinking. The artistic direction is the true highlight of Young Justice #5 though. The action sequences and backgrounds are gorgeous and the interlaced dialogue moments are handled really well. It’s an all around great comic.
Next issue promises to keep up the momentum and I really couldn’t be more excited. Bendis has a tendency to drag stories like this on and on, but luckily it seems he has grander things planned for Young Justice. This is a thrilling continuation that is just getting better with each new issue!
Young Justice #5 sees the team finally taking a stand against Lord Opal and even delves into the rather complicated circumstances surrounding their reunification. Full of action and heart alike, this issue proves to be a big step for the series that fans will certainly want to stay up to date on!
