Zatanna #4: I’ve Got Stories To Tell

Zatanna visits her predecessor in the title of Prime Magus and tells him the inner workings of her time with the role so far. Each tale reveals an aspect of Zatanna’s magic, but some things may be better off secret.

Zatanna’s status as the Prime Magus has been shrouded in mystery ever since issue one, and now we get a glimpse into just what that role entails. This is told to us in the form of three stories Zatanna is telling to Zahuti, the Egyptian God of the Moon and Knowledge, as well as the prior Prime Magus. Each tale shines a bit more light as to the scope of Zatanna’s new found power, as well as just how much she is influenced by those before her.

Jamal Campbell presents each story being told as a showcase for the creativity of Zatanna as she overcomes each challenge. Whether it be: settling disputes between different fairy clans, hunting werewolves, or questioning the meaning of magic before the universe splits apart. Zatanna does it all and Campbell continues to prove that he has a firm grasp on the character.

While Campbell still handles a bulk of the art, he is being helped out this time by Edwin Galmon, who more than holds his own on pencils. Both of them are backed by Andrew Dalhouse’s deep colors, that while they aren’t as rich as Campbell’s, still do more than enough to keep you immersed in this stunning world of magic.
