Recap

The slow-moving Zinnober series slows more, yet steps its game up in fleshing out its characters with a handful of shorts designed to help us better understand their world. James and Clair leave their Alaskan refuge years in the past, a small party finds a cache of food, and a man is converted to the dragon cult.

Review

On a quick read, there didn’t seem to be much here and I initially left feeling unimpressed I must admit. But on a second reading, I noticed several things I didn’t at first, including some excellent painted colors in the basement scene.

Probably the most significant story is the dragon cultist story, which initially reads like a survivalist story until the end. Up until this point, I had assumed the Dragon Cultists were just worshipping the dragons like the Xenomorph Cult in Alien Earthwar et all, whereas in this the cultists appear to be enthralled by the dragons, it really is pretty interesting.

He was protecting this group a minute ago.

The pencil work by various artists is excellent, not feeling like a big jam band style issue at all. I will say this issue is a little light on action but does a lot in terms of character development, although the ending makes me feel like something bigger is coming soon.

The colors on the bunker story really impressed me. I’m a sucker for painted comics.

Final Thoughts

If anything this issue should be read before the series, it contains a load of backstory I've been missing, this series just became more interesting, can't wait for #5!
