When I started my journey into the world of tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) in 2023, it was an easy rabbit hole to fall into. Of course I jumped right into the most popular game out there, Dungeons & Dragons. Since then, I’ve dabbled in other TTRPGs, such as Pathfinder, Candela Obscura, Monster Of The Week, and a series of one-shots of other games as well.
During my very first time at GenCon last year, one tabletop roleplaying games that I saw heavily advertised was Dragonbane, a reimagined version of the popular Swedish fantasy TTRPG from the 1980s, Drakar och Demoner. There were signs and billboards all over the convention center for it, and they even layered a sign on the main stairs so people who were walking up or walking by would see it.
Now – did I get interested in the game because the advertisements featured a gothic Darkwing Duck-like character on it? That’s neither here nor there.
But I purchased the game without knowing much about it, and I was able to find a group of people who were interested in playing the game at my local gaming store, Valkyrie’s Vault. We’ve been playing since September, and I can’t recommend it enough.
If you’re someone that is looking to start playing TTRPGs but a game like Dungeons & Dragons is a bit intimidating for you or you just want to play a different fantasy TTRPG, then you should give this game a shot.
