Encyclopedia of Superheroes: Silver Surfer

ORIGIN

The Silver Surfer made his debut in Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966) and was written by Stan Lee with art by Jack Kirby who is credited with creating the Surfer. Stan Lee was originally not a fan of this character that Kirby had inserted into a story they had already worked out. But Stan quickly warmed up to the Silver Surfer, so much so that he had mandated for a time that only he could write the Surfer.
Norrin Radd lived an idyllic life with his one true love Shalla-Bal on the utopian planet Zenn-La in the Deneb star system. One day Zenn-La was visited by The Devourer of Worlds, Galactus. To stop Galactus from destroying his peaceful planet, Norrin Radd offered to become the Herald of Galactus and search for uninhabited planets for him to consume. Galactus imbues Norrin with a portion of his Power Cosmic and gives him a board for him to fly on and obey his wishes. Eventually, the Silver Surfer leads Galactus to Earth where the Surfer meets the Fantastic Four and Alicia Masters who reawaken the humanity in Norrin. He turns on Galactus and while the Earth is saved, Galactus exiles the Silver Surfer to Earth and creates a barrier around it so the Surfer can no longer travel the spaceways.

FANTASTIC FOUR RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER (2007)

The Silver Surfer has appeared in several cartoons dating back to 1967’s Fantastic Four Cartoon and even had his own animated series for one season. He made his (thus far) only live action appearance in, of course, 2007’s Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer. The plot basically is taken from the first appearance of the Silver Surfer from Fantastic #48-50 as well as issues #57-60 when Dr. Doom steals the power cosmic from the Surfer. A spin-off solo film of The Silver Surfer was planned but languished in development hell before being forgotten.

With rights to The Fantastic Four, Silver Surface and The X-Men reverting back to Marvel Studios (Disney), it is only a matter of time till the Silver Surfer flies again.
