Return of the Living Dead
Recap
Return of the Living Dead is a zombie staple of the 80s, featuring BRAIIIIINNNSSSS, slapstick and the best 80s trope of all, nightmarish caricatures of punk rockers!
Review
Return of the living dead is a classic for a reason, allegedly taking place following Night of the Living Dead it does a great job working it’s way into that universe without directly treading on it. Interestingly Return doesn’t rely too heavily on tropes established in Romero’s franchise and instead creates some of it’s own, most notably the birth of the “fast zombie” and the ever iconic Braaaaiiinnnsss.
The effects in the movie are a bit dated at points but still pretty effective, with quite a bit of gore. Particularly effective are the makeup effects used for the non puppet zombies.
Part of the appeal to 11 year old me lay in the killer 80s Punk soundtrack featuring 45 Grave (PARTY TIME BABY!), TSOL, The Cramps and boatloads more.
Also noteworthy is the copious amount of nudity, much of it full frontal. Again quite attractive to 11 year old me but possibly not for everyone.
Final Thoughts
A great movie, if you haven't seen it definitely do so it's free to watch on Amazon Prime
