Review

This return to the world of Lego could have been a simple rehash of the first film, somehow positioning Emmit to once again become “The Special” and retreading old jokes. And in some ways, it was. But at its core, The Lego Movie 2 is a film about the pitfalls of growing up. The children, Finn and Bianca, serve a much more central role in the narrative, providing an almost refraction from the silliness of the first film and giving the second film much more substance. That’s not to say that the film is devoid of its silly nature that captured a nation but there is much more going on in regards to actual character and narrative development in the sequel.

The voice acting, as expected, was stellar. Pratt and Banks manage to continue their chemistry from the first film and even expand on that chemistry. Likewise, the musical numbers in the sequel took what worked from the first film (“Everything Is Awesome”) and transforms the music into an irresistible earworm you will be singing for months to come. The humor is nuanced enough to captivate both children and adults, albeit at different moments.

Final Thoughts

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part was a high-octane roller coaster ride filled with laughs and good times that managed to not forgo substance in service to fun.
