With Marvel TV being more viable than ever before, ABC seeks to keep a Marvel presence with a new mystery project.
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD has proven to be the little series that could. An action/adventure series set against the backdrop of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was at first written off for having slow moving plots and a somewhat uninteresting lead character in the mysterious Skye. By the end of the first season, though, all bets were off and the show had transformed itself into something far more interesting and layered than it originally seemed to be. Since then, ABC has been trying to get some sort of spin-off of the series. While one – Agent Carter – made it to air and was critically acclaimed, ratings didn’t allow for it to return for a third season. A second one called Marvel’s Most Wanted and said to be based on the further adventures of Bobbi Morse, aka Mockingbird, and Lance Hunter, was pitched but never went beyond the planning stages. Now, with Agents of SHIELD having been confirmed for the 2019 television season, ABC has set its sights on creating another Marvel-based TV series, even with the failure of last year’s Inhumans series hanging low over their heads.
Merrin Dungey, ABC Entertainment president, spoke with the Hollywood Reporter and had this to say: “We’re cooking up a couple things for broadcast. There’s one that I want to talk about, and Jeph Loeb [head of Marvel TV] won’t let me.”
What that series could be is really anyone’s guess. In recent times, Marvel has shown a willingness to branch out into different types of story and genre – everything from Agents of SHIELD to the Marvel Netflix series to Runaways to Cloak and Dagger have been different from each other, with their own point of view, and their own visual aesthetics. While It’s unlikely that the network would revisit Mockingbird, Agent Carter, or the Inhumans, there’s a vast library of Marvel properties that they could still do something with, including any variation of the Champions team, a lawyer/superhero She-Hulk series, or something a little more obscure like a series based on Marvel Comics private eye Dakota North. They have an entire universe of characters and stories to choose from, and what they decide to go with could be a game changer for them indeed.
As always, we’ll be watching!
