This September, writer J. Michael Straczynski makes a return to Marvel for the relaunch of Captain America, joined by artist Jesús Saiz and colorist Matt Hollingsworth. The book comes hot off the heels of the finale to Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly and Tochi Onyebuchi’s Captain America crossover, Cold War, and looks to focus on Steve’s roots in his community, both past and present. To tease the series and its new direction, Marvel has released a trailer for issue #1.
This marks the first ongoing series for Straczynski at Marvel since leaving due to the larger publishing calendar coming into conflict with his run of Thor. Marvel wanted to use the character to launch Siege, the next big event following Civil War and Secret Invasion, while Straczynski was focused on trying to rebuild the character after his recent resurrection. When it was clear that Marvel was going to develop Siege with or without Straczynski, the writer left the title at the end of that story arc. Brian Michael Bendis would go on to write Siege and was joined by Thor artist Olivier Coipel to illustrate the event.
Straczynski also faced issues during his time writing Amazing Spider-Man, where he brought Peter Parker and Mary Jane back together, and into the 21st century. He would work on redeveloping key elements of the character with collaborators like John Romita Jr, before being forced to undo that work by editorial during the One More Day storyline. The writer recently contributed shorter stories for books like Thanos: Death Notes, Thor #24, and Marvel Comics #1000.
