BOOM! Studios announces its newest original series, Animal Pound, from recent Eisner Award winner Tom King and artist/industrial legend Peter Gross. They will be joined by colorist Tamra Bonvillain (aka the not praised enough hero of Once & Future) and frequent King collaborator/letterer Clayton Cowles. The series, which releases this December, is a modern updating of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, taking the seminal story and revamping it into a major event comic.
Borrowing from the novel’s plot, Animal Pound sees a group of caged creatures staging an uprising against their two legged oppressors. From there, the animals will learn of the struggles that plague a new nation, as they try to establish a fair form of democracy and grapple with the factional nature of the political system.
Writer Tom King discussed the concept in the press release, stating:
“Animal Pound is the most ambitious story I’ve ever told, and I feel like a fool for trying to do it. But the story came to me strong, and with Peter drawing, I know we’ll pull it off; we’ll make something as insane, stunning, and frightful as the times we live in.”
Gross will not only provide the interior art but the main covers as well, and is joined by artists such as Yuko Shimizu, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Skottie Young for the variant covers to the series.
In the press release, Gross discussed working with King for the series, stating:
“Tom’s pitch for Animal Pound was the best pitch I’ve ever read (and I’ve read some great ones!). I was instantly on board and can’t wait to see it out in the world!”
Animal Pound #1 will be available in comic shops December 20, 2023 and the Animal Pound #1 Ashcan will be in comic shops November 15, 2023.
